My name is Taylor. I have a strong passion for marine mammals. Dolphins, Orcas, Belugas, Seals, Sealions, Walruses, you name it I love them all :D But there is one favorite I have to say, I don’t know what it is their power, their intellagents, or the special connection they make with humans. No matter what is is about them I have to say the one animal that really inspired me to try to become a trainer are the orcas. I love them all so much and I really hope I can someday work with them. So you can expect to see a lot of orcas on my page:) I tend to go to Mystic Aquarium very, very often so you can expect alot of Mystic too. I hope you enjoy my page.

PETA is suing SeaWorld for slavery because of their captive orcas. Really, PETA? Really? I’m not even going to go into how many other (and much, much worse) things PETA could protest.

You mean the other things that PETA can and DOES protest? Name one bad thing concerning animal rights that PETA hasn’t protested yet…. that’s right, nothing. They have a stance on anything. It was only a matter of time before they came after SeaWorld, and to be totally honest, I’m surprised it wasn’t sooner.

What about Lolita? I don’t remember ever hearing anything about Lolita on Peta’s website. If so, then I apologize, after all, it’s my job to stalk SeaWorld, not PETA.

But if PETA actually cared about orcas, they wouldn’t attack SeaWorld, they would go after Six Flags or sketchy marine parks in foreign countries. SeaWorld is by far the single best facility for captive orcas.

How if the confinement of a killer whale in one park any different to the confinement of another killer whale in a different park? There is no difference. Okay, sure, I get that you think just because the tank is bigger, that makes it okay. Sure, SeaWorld’s tanks are marginally bigger than Six Flags, yet compared to the ocean, they are about many thousands of times too small.

SeaWorld had top notch Vets, clean water, and big tanks. I won’t argue with your second comment because it is true.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has one orca all by herself. Her name is Shouka, and her biggest tank is 1/7 the size of one of SeaWorld’s tanks. Plus, SeaWorld only uses positive reinforcement to train their whales and never forces them to perform (they’ve even cancelled shows to keep the whales happy).

They cancelled shows because continuing them would be pointless. An angry, frustrated killer whale is not going to listen. And actually, they don’t ALWAYS cancel the show. Kalina was attacked by Kayla during a show, and actually hung around the back gate, waiting to be let out. SeaWorld refused to let her leave, despite her being attacked by a rampaging orca. She eventually returned to perform, but had a huge gash on her head. Oh yeah, SeaWorld wanted to make Kalina happy alright:

http://timzimmermann.com/2010/09/14/do-orcas-at-marine-parks-injure-one-another/
Scroll down to the segment about the Kalina and Kayla tussle.

Fights between killer whales are completely normal and go on all the time; both in the wild and in captivity. As for the shows, ballet performances for humans work the same way (I would know, I participated in a ton of them).

But since Six Flags only has one whale, she always has to perform in every single show (unless she gets sick), plus she has to do all the work because there are no other whales to do shows with her. Not to mention the fact that Six Flags also uses bullhooks on their elephants and has had other instances of animal abuse.

One of the biggest arguments used by many people who justify any type of animal cruelty attempts to point the finger elsewhere. Sure, Six Flags is no good, but is SeaWorld REALLY any better? No.

Actually, they are. You don’t see SeaWorld hitting their orcas with bullhooks. You didn’t even say a single thing to back up your statement about how SeaWorld is no better than Six Flags.

Anyway, if PETA actually cared about animals at all, they would go after much bigger issues that affect animals, such as foreign countries’ use of sun bears for their bile.

They already do.

But you don’t see them DO anything besides hold up a couple of signs with naked women next to them (which I find extremely disrespectful) yelling about how “bad” big companies are. The only animal I’ve seen them actually save is a chicken.

But if they’re going to go after a much smaller issue, they should at least try to help the animals that need help the most. SeaWorld should be the last marine park they go after.

So you acknowledge that there’s an issue with keeping orcas at SeaWorld?

That user never said that.

But instead, they’re only attacking SeaWorld because they care much more about money and publicity than they do about animals. PETA is supposed to be an animal rights group, but they would rather have publicity than help the animals who need it the most.

Wrong. PETA does many campaigns about all types of animal cruelty. If they wanted to do something about SeaWorld, don’t you think they would’ve said something sooner? PETA is a NON-PROFIT organisation, the only one in this scenario who cares about money is SeaWorld. You know, the multi-billion dollar company with shares in the stock market.

First off, I don’t see why people complain so much about SeaWorld needing money. Hello, it’s a business!!! They need money to continue being in business and take care of their animals!!!! I’ve only seen PETA boycott things that have a direct coalition to big businesses or something that has a significant role in the average person’s life. PETA is for publicity.

I’ve been to SeaWorld and I’ve been to Six Flags, and the orcas at SeaWorld seem pretty happy, but Shouka seems so sad that it actually made me cry (and I never cry in public).

“and the orcas at SeaWorld seem pretty happy”
“seem pretty happy”
“seem”
So you don’t know for certain?

You don’t know for certain either. You shouldn’t make an argument out of something that is currently impossible to get information out of.

Sorry for the rant, but you have no idea how much this pisses me off. There are thousands (if not millions or even billions) of animals suffering in the world, and all PETA cares about is publicity.

Well, when you form your own non-profit animal rights group that has saved countless animals, convinced millions of people to go vegetarian or vegan, and has managed to bring in laws to ease animal suffering, let me know and I’ll start listening.

Am I the only person who thinks it’s dumb to go vegan for animals? :P I don’t support factories but why not organic farm foods? Animals were put on this planet to either hunt or be hunted. That’s the natural way of things and is something that will never EVER change no matter how many signs you make. If you can’t follow even the simple rules of nature then I think that’s laughably sad. Going vegan for health reasons is a completely different matter. If you’re paranoid, I won’t mess with you.

I have absolutely nothing against AntiCaps IN GENERAL (unless you’re in my, or SeaWorld’s, face) and I didn’t mean for my rebuttal to seem offensive if it did. Have a nice day, all! :) PROCAPTIVITY FOREVER <3 <3

Okay, the reblog indentation thing is getting confusing to read lol, so i’ll just draw out your main points and write them here:

• What about Lolita?
Look, I don’t know the exact reasoning of PETA’s decisions, so I can’t answer everything. My guess however would be that Lolita wasn’t included because she is owned by Miami Seaquarium, and it’d be too difficult to include a killer whale from another business in the lawsuit.
And the reason why they went after SeaWorld is mostly because the company has been having a lot of issues lately. Firstly, Marineland sued them for Ikaika, Orca Coalition has appealed the decision to send Morgan to Loro Parque, and on TOP of that there’s the whole OSHA vs SeaWorld case. Now, PETA has sued them for slavery. I don’t deny that this case probably won’t get far. But it’s not about winning. PETA was never in it to win.
Imagine a tiny snowball, and each bad PR moment for SW makes the snowball bigger. It’ll just keep rolling and rolling and soon, it’ll turn into an avalanche. THAT is what PETA is trying to do - make an avalanche that will come crashing down on SeaWorld. You get me? Sorry if my analogy was bad lol.

I already know Lolita is from MSQ. I realized I didn’t make it clear enough in my previous post. I apologize for that. What concerns me is out of all PETA’s protests that I’ve never seen, I’ve never seen one at MSQ for Lolita.

Yes, I understood the analogy. :]

• SeaWorld has top-notch vets, etc.
I’m sure they do. SeaWorld has the biggest facility for orcas in the world. They bring in a lot of money, and can afford to have the best veterinarians. But even with all these medical resources, killer whales are still dying too young, and from diseases they would not normally contract in the wild. For example, Taku and Kanduke died from the West Nile Virus, a disease that is transmitted via mosquito bites. In the wild, killer whales NEVER come across insects, and any that do land on them are simply drowned when the orca goes under water. These deaths are a direct result of languishing at the surface of the pool for hours on end.

I’ve never heard of an Orca dying from an insect bite. Other than that, even if it is true, hopefully we can find cures for these diseases or maybe SeaWorld (if it can be afforded) could make the tanks even deeper. It’s hard to make modifications to match the whale’s comfort with all this OSHA safety junk going on in the background. Before all this trial stuff SW’s Orca tanks had rubbing rocks for the Orcas to play with, but now OSHA has demanded they get rid of the rocks to make room for the lifting floors so now their tanks are barren (which I think is extremely unfortunate).

• Fights between killer whales
Dominance issues arise in the wild, of course. But not to the extent that it does in captivity. Captive orcas are continually shipped between parks, and so each move brings new hierarchy challenges. Obviously, some killer whales co-exist better than others. But some just do not get along at all. Plus raking is observed in captivity to be far more aggressive than in the wild. I’m sure many people have seen the image of Tekoa at Loro Parque, where his skin was covered in rake marks. That kind of instance in the wild is very rare, and generally does not happen.
Another reason why captivity can bring out the worst in killer whales, is that when two orcas tussle, they cannot escape each other. At least in the ocean, if there is a disagreement, they can go their separate ways or give each other space. In a tank, they are forced together, and cannot escape each other. Usually this has violent results, such as the incident with Kayla and Kalina, as I said previously.

But like I said before - raking does occur in the wild, but it is not as violent as captive raking.

Actually, SeaWorld has separated whales before if they were having trouble getting along. For example, when Corky is around Ulises for too long, she has a tendency to “shut down,” so they keep her from being with Ulises alone and if she is in contact with Ulises, she has to be with other whales. Another instance of separation is when Kayla gave birth to a calf. She immediately rejected this calf and began to physically harm her by ramming her into the tank walls and raking at her. The separated the two whales and made sure they were separated.

• Bullhooks and SeaWorld being better than Six Flags;
I’m not really talking about bullhooks, but on that note, the use of bullhooks on elephants has been banned so I don’t believe Six Flags still does it. Six Flags doesn’t hit their orca with bullhooks either, lol.

I know that, lol. ;P

The reason why I see them as not being any better is because all marine parks are connected. They trade with each other, swap animals all the time. For example, Six Flags bought land off SeaWorld when they became ‘Six Flags Worlds of Adventure’.

I bring this point up because a lot of pro-caps who support SeaWorld often don’t support crappy parks like Miami SeaQuarium, yet on that note - SeaWorld themselves has shown support to MSQ by sending dolphins to them. Surely a world-class facility would not associate themselves with a park without AZA accreditation? That’s what I mean by ‘all parks are connected’.

Why were the dolphins traded? Were they given money to trade or would it have been beneficial to them? Whether all parks are connected or not doesn’t make a difference. SeaWorld is still better than MSQ even if they do business together.

• You don’t see PETA do anything except hold up signs;
Well, tbh I don’t see what else they COULD do except hold up signs lol. That’s what a protest is. I’ve been to many, and have even organised a few of mine. Generally people just rock up, hold a sign and then go home once the day is over.
The reason why PETA has the whole ‘naked women’ thing is because it IS attention-grabbing. In an experiment, PETA ran two protests- one where people just stood around holding signs and handing out leaflets, and another where they all stripped down to their undies, had a pillow fight and held banners.
The first protest, people didn’t care, they avoided them and didn’t notice the issue. The second protest was a huge success. TV and news crew came down, a crowd gathered around to watch, and people actually took NOTICE of the issue! Because sadly, people only notice if you do something stupid or crazy.

People call PETA attention whores for the things they do. But they don’t do it to get attention to themselves, they do it to get attention to the issue at hand. That’s the whole point.

That is true, though I still despise the whole degrading women thing. They have put extremely offensive posters up in places that could bring trauma to people.

• SeaWorld needing money;
All great non-profit groups need money to run campaigns, raise awareness, finance research programs and so forth. So I don’t deny that it costs money to do these things. The thing is, SeaWorld has WAY TOO MUCH money! And less than half of it goes into conservation.
SeaWorld made $1.2 billion dollars in PROFITS (that means the money they made after all expenses paid). How much of this did they donate to conservation? Only 0.07%. The rest of the profits lined the pockets of the CEOs and executives.

You know what I think they should do with the money? Actually put more than half of it back into conservation. Into protecting WILD species (not captive ones). Running campaigns to raise awareness about the degradation of the oceans. And you know what? Raise the salary of the trainers. As a company, SeaWorld cares very little about the environment, wild animals, and even the animals in their care and the people who work with them.

Because if they cared, don’t you think they would donate a little bit more than 0.07% of their profits to conservation?

But on that note, SeaWorld also takes precious government grant money that they don’t need, so even LESS of their money is spent on conservation. Whilst real non-profit groups struggle to make ends meet, SeaWorld is taking all the funding from them. Funding that they just do not need.

Where exactly did you get all this information? I want to see a link.

• Whales are happy?
No, obviously we don’t know if they are happy or not. But I think they’re unhappy due to the observed lethargic behaviours, floating aimlessly in their tanks, suffering from diseases they normally wouldn’t get, and being socially isolated (in some cases) from their own species.

Either way, there is no way to know. I personally think the whales are happy because of the tolerance they have with humans touching them and how gentle they can be when not provoked. I’ve never seen an instance with cruelty at SeaWorld EVER. Where as PETA, I’ve seen many many animal cruelty cases coming from their own business (i.e. throwing dead puppies and kittens that they killed into a Piggly Wiggly dumpster with no authorization from the owner of the dumpster).

• Veganism
A little bit straying from the topic at hand, but eh, I’ll bite lol. I don’t think it’s dumb to go vegan for animals at all. There is a lot of abuse in the dairy industry of animals (calves taken away from their mothers the day they are born, chickens forced into tiny cages to lay eggs).
Sure, the natural way of life is to hunt or be hunted. But humans have perverted this way. We don’t hunt anymore (save for the few who actually hunt to survive). Going to the neon-lit supermarket to buy chemically processed flesh is not the natural way of life.

That’s true, but I mean eating meat in general. Humans eating meat is natural.

Well, you may think things will never ever change, but the fact is, things change all the time. Change is inevitable, and is an always-evolving process.

It’s impossible to eradicate meat eating as a whole. As long as meat is a necessary supplement for others who probably can’t afford greens and herbs, then meat eating will never vanish.

Heck, just 100 years ago, veganism/vegetarianism was unheard of, and I’m sure anyone who even thought about it was considered crazy. But that’s just it - change is a SLOW process. It may take longer than our lifetime to change something, but that doesn’t mean something will never change.

Anyway, ANTI-CAPTIVITY FOREVER <3 <3

Lololololol I see what you did there ;P

Wow I wrote an essay lol

Hooray for essays! :D

These are the kind of debates I like. No insulting, no yelling, just talking. :]

“Get in my belly!”

This is Juno doing his “signature” move. It’s cute, however, it IS an aggressive behavior. Juno does this ALL the time and he does it to every and any small kid by the glass, anybody tapping on the glass, and anybody touching the glass. The trainers aren’t fully sure whether or not he does this aggressively. When I was playing with him he jaw popped CONSTANTLY at the people around me, however, he never ONCE jaw popped at me. It REALLY bothers me though when people are like “Oh look at how cool that is, he’s trying to eat us!” Or worse “Look what he does when I do this!” *taps on glass* NO. Do you not understand that this is NOT a playful behavior? (Maybe it is sometimes with him, however normally it is not a playful behavior) I’ve tried to tell people he doesn’t like when you tap the glass but of course no one listens. And the never fail to scream and squeal when he does jaw pop :/ -___- Poor Juno :(

poor baby. i never saw him do this at SW.

Here is my opinion on this post:

What you are saying may be true, but I almost am sure why he does this. As you know he learned from Kela, and one day when he did this to a small child, e probely had the reaction that most small children do, freak out of course! He will do this for a reaction. I actually did a fun test with my friend in my recent visit…I visit Mystic often, I am not positive but I suppose Juno is used to me by now. He will never jaw pop at me, (although he did once when I first interacted with him). When i ignored this behavior he stoped, and never ever jaw popped at me again. This time though, i brought a friend. She did not bug him nor tap on the glass in any way she just stood there. He jaw popped, she ignored, never did it again. So as you can now see, he does this often to little kids because he KNOWS they will freak out and get excited.

Im not saying he likes it, and im not saying he does not, but in my opinion he does this for his own entertainment, so I think he is not being aggressive at all, alothough in the wild it is considered aggressive. Lastly, im guessing he hates the tapping, I would hate it too but you never know maybe he enjoys it in some weird way. Because i bet he is smart enough to to know that if he swims away, the tapping stops.
